Big benefits of simple changes

Iím proud of being a Yorkshireman and do confess to fitting the stereotype on a number of levels, including being careful with the pennies.

So imagine my delight that nearly eighty of Birminghamís finest became honorary Yorkshire folk for the night at the launch of our new energy and cost saving service, ECO IT. The great and the good from the city turned out in force to listen to presentations from myself, Microsoft and Dell about new technologies that are the vanguard in improving green credentials by reducing energy consumption and carbon footprints. And of course saving money at the same time.

A few of the statistics we presented really seemed to bring the message home to the people in the room about how easy it was to make simple changes which could make a huge difference.

As part of my pitch I reeled off a few facts which really seemed to strike a chord with the people in the room. The Carbon Trust believes companies could introduce no-cost actions immediately which could make a 10 per cent saving.

But the one conclusion by the trust that really hit home was that a 20 per cent cut in energy costs represents the same bottom line benefit as a five per cent increase in sales in many businesses.

Imagine that, simply by implementing a few no-cost activities, every firm in Birmingham is halfway to a five per cent bottom line benefit.

And thatís simple stuff such as turning monitors and PCs off at night, at which point a few people shifted in their seats.

For a few quid firms can get software which can introduce new programmes that improve the efficiency of printing by up to 25 per cent without any perceived difference to users, as well as centrally managing the hibernation of desktops outside of normal working hours.

And then we mentioned what would happen if companies were serious about investing in or consolidating their IT by reducing the number of servers they required and introduced energy saving desktops.

Thereís where Dell in particular played a blinder in explaining that energy saving was top of the agenda for all major manufacturers and wowing the audience with some staggering facts comparing current machines with ones from as little as two years ago.

The Carbon Trust also says that most firms donít know their carbon footprint, which I can believe, but with legislation coming down the line they will soon be forced to.

So the overriding message we hoped that people took away from the event was Ďif you canít measure it, you canít save it.í
